Hello, so with my new RA scholarship and the more internship opportunities I can get if I can travel into downtown, my parents have their interest piqued and I'm trying to come up with a proper proposal to purchase a car.

Because it snows here, I kind of need 4WD, but I'm not going to drive when it snows, so that might be contradicting, but just for good measure.

I've looked at the Craigslist near home and Autotrader and I've narrowed it down to a couple cars I'm looking at and I want to ask you guys for your opinions on them.

2005 Subaru Wagons
2006 BMW 530XI interests me, but it's on Craigslist, and it has 150,000 miles, and the last time we had a BMW, we didn't have the best relationship with it. (Money pit in maintenance.)

Kinja'd!!!

Honorable Mention:
Jaguar X-Type Wagon or S-Type Wagon I forget, but it would NEVER MAKE SENSE FOR ME TO GET ONE.

Budget is sub-$10,000 but I'm aiming for around $7,000. The cheapest Legacy Wagon is actually $5,000 right now and it's a manual. And my parents don't want me driving a manual. UGH.

Why don't parents want you driving a manual?

Is it the same reason as my parents?

Insurance reasons mainly right now I guess. My dad loves manuals but won't allow me to drive it.

Mainly insurance.

Where do you live? If Canada, import a legacy wagon... Twin turbo, awd goodness for around $6000, and 70,000 km

I'm from California and I live in Oklahoma for college.

Trust me, nothing would make me happier than a 2.5GT Limited Legacy Wagon right now but they're out of my price range at like $12,000.

Dealers even advertise these as rare -_-

Insurance has nothing to do with it I'm pretty sure.

My dad just says it'll be "too much work for me" and you'll "hate it after a while".

I drive a 2005 Subaru wagon (Legacy GT) - it's a great car. Lots of fun to drive, has good power, and comfortable. Interior is much much better than any recent Subaru I think (it actually feels well built and not cheap), and personally its my favourite looking generation of Legacy.

It does have some rattles - typical subaru, so no comparison to a BMW or something like that. But cheaper to run and you get more for your money I'd say. Fuel economy isn't the best - I average around 25MPG with mostly freeway driving (it's also hard to not stomp on that gas pedal!).

I have a manual - which is pretty rare - can't attest to the automatic, but I wouldn't expect much and I've heard it robs quite a bit of the power.

ps - if you don't NEED the extra space and can do with a less "premium" feeling interior, I'd seriously consider a WRX wagon/Saabaru - my only complaint about the LGT is that it's a bit too big for my needs and not quite as chuckable as I'd like.

It might also be because on the list of potential future cars for our family, there's only two with a manual and they were both added onto there because my dad wanted one.

Manual 911 Targa and WRX STi.

But nope, he'll never let me get a manual. He's letting me pick between a this-generation GS or his LS when I graduate from college. And he's already planted this automatic-biased seed in my mind long enough because I was more excited that the Golf R would come in an automatic than I was angry that some cars get their manual option removed.

Damn Canadians and their healthcare, and their 15 year import laws, and their wagons, and their mooses.

Do you like puppies.

Cause I just put a bunch of them into a burning Ferrari.

HO HO. That'll teach you not to tease me with these cars.

JK. I'm so sad ;-;

My dad really tried hard to get it through my head that PDK is newhappyfuntimefuturecar (he's a huge Porsche fan), but I wasn't having any of it. I had found the internet by then. The Targa should be a purchase no matter what the transmission, it's fucking awesome. You should really push for manual though, you might change your mind once you drive it.

I guess I'd have to learn how to drive it at home, and I'd need at least a summer to learn and this entire summer I'm going to spend at college so I'll have to wait until next summer to learn, so I guess it's just easier if it's an Automatic.

Oh and cause I suck at doing a lot of things in life, I don't want to ruin Manual bits that if I got an Automatic wouldn't have broken.

To be honest, I would've picked like a 300TD wagon, but my dad would prefer something from this.

millenium.

I also suck at a lot of stuff.

But I'm going to be purchasing a Fiesta ST at the beginning of summer with all of the money I saved up from working awful jobs. I have no idea how to drive a manual. yolo!

I get that. I was kinda joking. Kinda. Not really - you should get this.

Your story (that I read above) is sad and confusing. I don't get why your dad, as a manual enthusiast, would want anything less for his kid(s). Not judging - just don't get it. Maybe you're really awkward and uncoordinated?

On a related note, I found that Volvo shopping for a nice safe starter car for my kids. Oldest is 10. Manual is required. I know I have some time, but I figure maybe I could use it a little bit before they get to. And, you know, keep it running nice and everything.

Good luck - hope you find something good. And learn to drive stick some day. It's awesome, and won't take a whole summer, even if you're awkward and uncoordinated.

Wouldn't be bad in British Racing Green and with a leaper. They did make a manual S type, but of course it stayed in Europe.

Not true! There was one for sale at a used car place about a mile from my house! And it was a U.S. market car!

I looked it up and you're right. They let a few manuals into North America in 2003. I guess they figured that when trying to increase sales in the US of an under-performing car, the best solution is to add MANUAL. No S-Type wagon of any transmission made it here, though.
